The Friends of Yateley Manor School (FYMS) is a part of the family of Yateley Manor. FYMS is made up of parents, teachers and friends and its aim is to:
- Provide further facilities and resources that are beyond the parameters of school budgets to advance the education of the pupils
- Encourage an inclusive community of staff, parents, guardians, those associated with the school and most importantly the pupils of the school
- Engage in activities which support the school and advance the education of the pupils.
Our Current Project
We are currently raising funds for a sensory garden at the school which will cost approximately £10,000. Our hope is that we will have raised the funds for this project by the end of this school year.
The idea of a sensory garden is that plants, hard landscaping and other garden materials and features are selected for their appeal to all five senses with the aim of offering a richer and more therapeutic experience to a range of people with different needs. All gardens are places where our senses are stimulated and what distinguishes a sensory garden from a traditional garden environment is the considered inclusion of features with sensory qualities, with the intention of creating a stimulating and beneficial environment for everyone. Such sensory features not only induce sensory responses but can also provide individuals with natural ‘cues’ that help them interpret and better utilise the environment. It is proposed to build the garden in the area between the Music School and Woodland Area. It would be clearly defined as an area and could include seating, outdoor instruments, herbs and water features, for example.
2018/2019 Activities and Achievements
Over the past 12 months, FYMS has raised over £20,000 to enable the installation of an outdoor stage at the school. This has now been constructed next to the Learning Support Building.
Drama is an important element of the curriculum and simply being outside the confines of a traditional classroom gives children a sense of freedom and leaves them feeling less inhibited.
In addition, FYMS activities has funded the purchase of an Aeroball – a trampoline-based game designed for 4 people to compete against one another to score points in a basketball style game. Yateley Manor are one of the first schools in the country to own an Aeroball and it’s a fabulous addition to our diverse sports programme.
Other projects that FYMS have funded in recent years include:
