Winchester College has the longest unbroken history of any school in England and some of the most beautiful buildings of any educational institution in the world. For over six hundred years it has educated a long succession of boys who have gone on to occupy prominent and useful positions in the society of their day. It has adapted successfully and is still adapting to changing circumstances, while remaining true to its traditional values and to the Christian basis of its foundation. The College prides itself on giving all pupils a broad, liberal education and on stimulating a lifelong interest in intellectual and cultural matters. It offers a distinctive curriculum with a strong, non-examined element, as well as a very wide range of extra-curricular activities. Although its examination results are excellent, preparation for examinations does not dominate a boy's time in the school. A Winchester education prepares a boy for life, not just for examination success and university entrance. Winchester has been fortunate in attracting outstanding staff and creating an atmosphere in which scholarship and excellence are valued for their own sake. The very favourable ratio of teachers to pupils allows a high level of individual care. So, too, does the school's continuing emphasis on a boy's identity with his boarding house. These are small communities within the wider school community in which boys eat, sleep and work and in which their individual needs for support and encouragement can best be met.
