St Swithun’s is a well-established boarding/weekly boarding and day school for girls, set on the downs overlooking Winchester. In its striking group of purpose-designed buildings and rolling playing fields, it provides a welcoming environment and a broad, balanced education. Academic results are impressive and the emphasis is very much on the education and development of the whole girl, identifying each pupil’s potential and giving her the skills and confidence she will need for the future. Visitors frequently comment on the friendly and purposeful atmosphere; the members of the sixth form who show visitors around the school are lively and articulate and reflect the school’s ethos in their direct answers. As well as academic success, St Swithun’s girls participate with great success in many other areas. St Swithun’s Young Engineers Club was selected by the Young Engineers of Britain as its first Club of the Month, in recognition of its work with a variety of projects from satellites to automatic parking devices. The school’s lacrosse players regularly provide a significant proportion of the County and West of England squads. Music and Theatre Arts flourish in the new Performing Arts Centre; currently there are choirs, orchestras, chamber groups and ensembles making music both in and out of school. St Swithun’s enjoys the opportunity to sing regular evensongs in Winchester Cathedral, and groups of instrumentalists compete with distinction in the national Chamber Music for Schools competition. Girls are also to be found absorbed in the resources of the well-stocked library, the IT room and the comfortable common rooms and house facilities. Boarding accommodation is modern and of a high standard.
