Shiplake College is a small and friendly welcoming school sat in an idyllic 45 acre site on the bank of the River Thames south of Henley. There are four boarding houses and one day house in a school of just over 300 pupils. With small classes and dedicated, experienced teachers it has a reputation for pastoral care and academic added value. The College caters for a broad range of abilities. It has a strong Learning Support department. ICT is a particular strength with four ICT rooms used by the academic departments. This year two pupils have been offered Conditional Oxbridge places. The school has houses for day, full and weekly boarding boys with day and boarding girls admitted in the Sixth Form. Pupils are encouraged to pursue a broad education taking part in plays, concerts, the Young Enterprise and Duke of Edinburgh Award Schemes as well as many other extra-curricular activities. Rowing is particularly strong with the College’s J16 IV recently successfully representing Great Britain versus a French crew. Cricket, football, hockey, rugby, tennis and squash are also popular. In 2004 the 1st XV won the Oxfordshire Rugby U19 Cup and there is a cricket tour to Barbados at Easter. In a small school all pupils are encouraged to take responsibility and courses are organised to develop leadership and management skills.
