The origins of Sherborne School date back to the eighth century and later refounded by Edward VI in 1550. The School lies in the attractive Abbey town of Sherborne, an ideal centre for education. There is a regular rail service between Sherborne and London (Waterloo) via Andover, Basingstoke and Woking. It offers the ‘Best of Both Worlds’ in education – all the advantages of single-sex teaching with many of the benefits of co-education through the strong links with Sherborne School for Girls. It is predominantly a boarding school for about 540 boys who are accommodated in eight houses. Virtually all boys go to university. In 2003 over 40% of A level results were A grade and over 70% A or B grade with just over a quarter of the year gaining three of more A grades. The GCSE results, and the AS results, were our best ever. Sherborne provides an excellent all-round education with first-rate music, art, drama, technology, careers and sports departments, with a Sports Centre, fifty acres of playing fields and a new floodlit all-weather pitch. All the boarding houses have been refurbished over the last few years and provide very comfortable accommodation. Great emphasis is placed on pastoral care with Housemasters and wives, personal tutors and the Chaplain playing leading roles. Sherborne is very much a forward-looking School – a new Science centre has been opened recently and the former laboratories have been converted into a new Art School, a Design and Technology Centre and new classrooms. We would be delighted to meet Yateley Manor families – they can be assured of a very warm welcome on any visit to Sherborne. For information on entry and Scholarship details, please contact Michael Cleaver, Registrar on the above number.
