“The school provides an environment in which the unconventional is valued, individuality is truly recognised and a diversity of interests encouraged.” (ISC Inspection Report, 2002) Bedales was founded at the turn of the C20th by J H Badley, a progressive educationalist who wanted a school that would be significantly different from all others. At the time, the school was criticised as a “preposterous experiment”, but it has proved to be one that others have enthusiastically followed. At Bedales, pupils are recognised as individuals, respected and valued, and given the space they need to grow and develop. Members of staff and pupils call each other by their first names and there is no formal school uniform. It is a one-off school with a unique character and it is essential to visit to understand the ethos. The school, situated in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, attaches great importance to its reputation for high academic standards alongside its breadth of activity in other areas such as art and crafts, drama, dance and music. A major feature is the Outdoor Work department where pupils maintain a large tree nursery, grow fruit and keep livestock. In addition, they have also been involved in the rebuilding of two barns and the building from scratch of a workshop and office for the Drama department. Bedales achieves excellent academic results, with most leavers going on to degree courses, and an increasing number to Oxbridge. At 13+, scholarships are available for pupils who show general exceptional promise or ability, and for music. At 16+, scholarships are offered in academic subjects, Drama, Art, Design and Music.
