The Abbey School has been at the forefront of girls’ independent education since its foundation. The traditional buildings are complemented by substantial extensions and modernisation such as a new ‘state of the art’ Science Block and the re-equipping of all six ICT Labs. The Senior School educates about 700 girls aged 11 to 18, including a strong Sixth Form of about 160 girls, with their own Sixth Form Centre. Thus each girl is in a unit small enough for her to be a highly valued individual, yet part of a community large enough to provide the full range of facilities, options and activities. Academic expectations are high and our excellent examination results ensure that our girls are able to gain entry to the universities of their choice. Fundamental to this success is the provision of a stimulating environment in which every girl is encouraged to have high aspirations and achieve her full potential. Once again, The Abbey topped the Government’s GCSE league table for all the Reading schools, with 99.9% pass rate and 72% A/A*. At A level, we are a First Division school, with 100% pass rate and over 86% A/B the norm. Each girl can access a wide range of extra-curricular activities and we place great emphasis on breadth, as well as depth, of education. Clubs, concerts, drama productions and displays develop individual talents and promote new interests. Crucial to our ethos is the personal rapport established between our dedicated staff and each girl. We aim to foster in her the knowledge, skills and sense of responsibility she will need to take her place in the adult world. Above all, we believe it is the girls who make the school. Their enthusiasm and talents, their efforts and successes, their ideas and suggestions all contribute to the distinctive ambience of The Abbey School.
